A SMALL CHURCH WITH A BIG LOVE FOR GOD

God’s 7 Love Languages – Part 3: Trust

(This is a condensed summary of the sermon preached on October 19, 2025.)

We often use the phrase “famous last words” when someone says something confidently just before being proven wrong. But when Jesus spoke His final words on the cross, every one of them was true—and life-changing.
In Luke 23:46, we read:
“Father, into your hands I entrust my spirit.”
This simple but powerful sentence reveals what real trust looks like. Even in His final moments, Jesus showed complete confidence in His Father’s love and plan. His death was not a tragedy—He willingly gave His life for us. Let’s look at three things Jesus’ final words teach us about trust.

1. Jesus gave His life voluntarily.
No one took Jesus’ life from Him. He said in John 10:18, “No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord.” The cross wasn’t an accident or a defeat—it was His choice. He willingly faced suffering and death because of His love for us. Trust begins when we choose to surrender, not because we have to, but because we want to.

2. Jesus gave His life confidently.
Most people in His position could barely whisper, but Jesus called out with a loud voice. His final words were not a cry of fear—they were a shout of victory. When you know who holds your life, you can face even your darkest moments with courage. Real trust gives confidence, even when everything around you looks uncertain.

3. Jesus gave His life trustingly.
“Father, into your hands I entrust my spirit” comes from Psalm 31:5—a bedtime prayer Jewish children recited before sleep. Perhaps Mary taught Jesus those words when He was young. In His final breath, Jesus returned to the same simple trust He’d known as a child. Even on the cross, He focused not on His pain but on His Father.

So what can we learn from this?
When you face life’s darkest moments, remember these four truths:

1. You have a Father in heaven who loves you.
God isn’t distant—He’s a caring Father who knows what you’re going through and loves you more deeply than you can imagine.

2. Your Father can be trusted.
Even when life feels out of control, God never breaks His promises. You can place your worries and future into His hands.

3. Your Father is working behind the scenes.
You may not see it, but God is taking care of things you can’t. What’s unseen is often more real than what’s visible.

4. Your Father can handle anything you put in His hands.
His hands are big enough to bless you, strong enough to hold you, and scarred enough to remind you how much you’re loved.

When you don’t know what else to do, follow Jesus’ example:
“Father, into your hands I entrust my spirit.”
Trust isn’t about understanding everything—it’s about resting in the hands of the One who does.
