Prayers that God says "Yes" to

(The following is an outline of two sermons preached by Michael Larsen in May-June, 2025)

In Daniel 9, we learn how to pray the kind of prayer God says “Yes” to—especially during a crisis. Daniel models six key steps.

1. Let God Speak to You First
Effective prayer starts by listening to God through His Word. God always initiates; we respond. Daniel studied the scriptures and discovered God’s promise through Jeremiah that Jerusalem would be rebuilt after 70 years. Knowing God's promises guides us in how to pray. Jesus said, “If you stay connected to me and my words remain in your heart, ask whatever you wish...” (John 15:7). So we must stay in the Word and maintain a right relationship with God.

2. Focus Your Attention on God
Daniel “turned to the Lord” (Dan. 9:3). Turning your face to someone shows you're fully present. You can do this with God by looking up and praying aloud. Seek God earnestly, not casually. Jeremiah 29:13 says, “You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.” God rewards those who seek Him (Heb. 11:6), and when we put Him first, He meets all our needs (Matt. 6:33).

3. Express Your Desires with Emotion
Daniel pleaded with God. Real prayer is emotional and heartfelt—not ritualistic. God cares more about authenticity than eloquence. Expressing deep emotions like Daniel did (Dan. 9:3) shows sincerity. Jeremiah 50:4 says the people will return “in tears” seeking God. Sincere, passionate prayer often comes during painful times, and God listens to those prayers.

4. Demonstrate Your Seriousness
Daniel fasted—an act used throughout Scripture to show urgency and dependence on God. Fasting frees time for prayer and demonstrates the depth of your desire. Jesus said some breakthroughs only come through “prayer and fasting” (Matt. 17:21). If you’re in a serious situation, fasting can powerfully focus your prayers.

5. Thank God for His Promises
Gratitude should accompany prayer. Daniel thanked God for His faithfulness and love (Dan. 9:4). We don’t pray expecting answers because we’re good—but because God is gracious. Even though Israel had sinned, Daniel acknowledged God’s mercy (Dan. 9:9). Always thank God that He keeps His promises.

6. Humbly Confess Your Sins
Daniel confessed not just his sins, but those of his people (Dan. 9:5–11). God doesn’t punish honest confession—He forgives it. Don’t make excuses; agree with God. True confession leads to mercy and restoration. Daniel’s humility moved God to send the angel Gabriel with an immediate response (Dan. 9:20–23).

Finally, Daniel’s prayer follows the same pattern as God’s promise in 2 Chronicles 7:14: If God’s people humble themselves, pray, seek His face, and turn from their sins, He promises to hear, forgive, and heal. This isn’t a national political promise—it’s for all God’s people.

Whatever needs healing in your life—mind, heart, body, finances, relationships—start with these six steps.
